Why Mics, Why TheMicStore?

We thought that it’s only fair we share our story about where on earth TheMicStore came from. If I’m honest, I really didn’t think that anyone would be that interested in who we were. But time and again, when I talk to clients on the phone or in person, it seems that who they are dealing with is at least as important as what we can offer. When I think about it, this makes sense as personally I only do business with people I like and trust.

So today I’d like to share the story about who we are, and where we have come from.

Here’s Matt

As the title gives away, my name’s Matt, and I’m one of the two founders of TheMicStore. I’ll tell you a bit about my business partner Steve in a bit, but for now you’ve got me!

Around 20 years ago, having finished a degree in Music at a little-known place called Bretton Hall College in Yorkshire, I did what many people do when leaving university – I had no idea what I was going to do with the rest of my life. Music students have to be supremely talented to actually get hired as a professional musician, and as a first-study classical vocalist (baritone) I really was just an OK performer. But by that point, I had already been bitten by the bug that is recording technology – The art of capturing the essence of a beautiful performance.

So when I got an offer to join a music retailer back in 1995, I jumped at the chance! Great new gear, chatting about recording all day – I thought all my buses had come in at once! Now although it was good fun, it’s not as glamorous as it’s made out to be. Roll forward a few years, and I was ready to move on. It was about this time that computers & recording were collaborating well and so into an IT career I stumbled.

In what many of my friends or family would describe as a ‘proper job’, I learned about this new-fangled Internet thing. From online platforms, to securing personal data, I was responsible for keeping the news active across the world (no joke) with Reuters, as well as helping your council to protect data they hold about you. All very boring to musicians I know, but without this we could never have set up TheMicStore.

To cut a long story short, the call back to the audio industry simply became too great, and it was time to do something a bit different and run our own company. Two heads are always better than one, so I called on my good friend, and former colleague, Steve.

And now for Steve

I met Matt back in the ’90s when we were both representing audio manufacturers on the road. At the time I was working with Fostex and Genelec, but my music career began way before that.

Having started working life as a qualified financial consultant, one day one of my colleagues died of a heart-attack in his 30′s and I was determined that I wasn’t going to follow suit. Rising stress levels in the industry made it likely that the same would happen to me at some point and so I was looking for an alternative career.

I also started out with a retailer in Leeds, but mixed this up with becoming a session guitarist, engineer and producer. This was where my recording, and most importantly microphone, interest first came about. Roll on 1,100 live gigs, a smattering of chart success, and a stint in the audio-for-video market writing music for video games, and it was fair to say that I was beginning to feel fairly experienced!

After years working for some of the largest audio distribution companies, I decided to set up my own distribution company which is now 10 years old and growing strong. But times change, and alongside my distribution business  I decided to set up TheMicStore with Matt as it was a great opportunity to make a difference in the retail industry.

Why TheMicStore?

Buying microphones online had historically been really difficult. There was so little good information available in a single place, and very few people who genuinely understood the difference between each microphone on the market. So TheMicStore came about through a perceived demand and belief that it could offer something genuinely different.

If we’re honest, as a start-up business, the small size of microphones was attractive because it meant less storage space. Anything which allowed the business to grow whilst keeping costs down to a minimum made economic sense. And the fact that microphones cross into so many vertical markets (retail, installation, broadcast, education, worship, conference, etc, etc) meant that our target market was reasonably big too. But in short, it just felt right!

But you also Headphones, P.A. and Recording gear…

We do. Whilst our passion is the microphones themselves, a mic is just a worthless item unless combined with something to either capture or amplify the sound. So we offer a wide range of related items, to make the most from your new mic. Whether it is a simple handheld recorder to go with a lapel mic, or a full P.A rig to compliment microphones for every band member, we have a solution. If you are happy with our service and attitude, and we sincerely hope you are, then why not be able to buy all your audio gear from us?

What about the future?

Our aim is to be the only place you’ll ever think of to buy your mics and related hardware. We know that to do this we will have to listen to what you want from us, deliver on our promises (such as our 5-year guarantee), and continue to offer the best deals online or in person. So feel free to add your comments below, and together we can make sure that we stay a relevant company well into the next decade.
